Step 1: Anesthesia

You will be prescribed medication for your comfort during the procedure. Dr. Weinzweig and our anesthesiologist will decide the best choice given your physical health and cosmetic goals.

Step 2: Incision

There are two choices in terms of the location of the incision. A traditional facelift incision begins at the hairline of the temples and continues around the ear and ends in the lower scalp behind the ears. A Limited Incision Facelift involves shorter incisions at the temple and is only used with mini facelifts.

Step 3: Resculpt, Redrape, and Remove excess skin

At this point fat may be sculpted or redistributed from the face, neck and jowls. In most cases, the deeper layers of the face and the muscles are lifted and the underlying tissues are repositioned. The skin is re-draped over the uplifted contours and the excess skin is trimmed away. If necessary, a second incision will be made under the chin to further improve the signs of an aging neck.

Step 4: Close the Incisions

The surgeon will close the incisions. When fully healed, the incision lines from the procedure will be well hidden within the hairline and the natural creases of the face and ears.

Step 5: The Results

Once the swelling and bruising subside, the visible improvements of a facelift will appear. Your final results will give your face a more youthful and rested appearance.

You may be good candidate for a facelift if you wish to appear younger without altering your facial features. Facelift candidates must be in generally good health and have realistic expectations.

A facelift procedure takes approximately 3-4 hours. We ask that patients plan to spend their day at the surgical center as the check-in and recovery process takes some time.

After the procedure, a bandage will be applied to the face and head. Some discomfort and bruising can be expected but can be relieved with medications. The stitches are typically dissolving and do not need to be removed. JW Plastic Surgery will provide you with specific aftercare instructions.

There are several procedures that are often done the same time as a facelift. Some patients choose to have a neck lift, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, brow lift, or chin surgery combined with their facelift.

Facial injectables and fillers can be an alternative treatment to a facelift. However, these results are only temporary and will not give the same results as a facelift, especially for severe sagging.

You have a range of surgical facilities to select from when booking with JW Plastic Surgery. We have over 10 hospital and 5 outpatient centers for you to select from. In some cases, your medical history will determine the most appropriate health setting for your procedure.

Most patients in the Midwest select to have their procedure performed at JW Operatory, our Joint Commission-accredited facility on the North Shore, due to the lower price and higher availability of the facility.

Patients in Florida most often select our hospital facility in the Lower Keys for pricing and availability reasons.

Yes. Results from a facelift are not temporary like fillers or non-surgical solutions; however, the procedure will not stop the natural aging process.

Generally, patients are able to return to their work about one week after their procedure.

FACELIFT SURGERY

The effects of aging and the environment can make your face look tired and older than you feel. Sagging skin and hallowing of the face can make you look older and unhappy. A facelift can turn back the clock and make you look like a younger, more rested you. Removing excess skin and facial re-contouring reverses the signs of aging.

There are many types of facelift procedures and the facelift procedure you have – mini-facelift or full facelift – will depend on your individual needs. We are often asked whether patients are “too young” or “too old” for facelift procedures. Our facelift patients range from 40 years old to 85 years old. A facelift simply describes the redraping of skin to reverse the signs of aging. Each facelift procedure at JW is individualized and appropriate for each different age group.

Facelift procedures are often combined with other anti-aging facial plastic surgery procedures such as eyelid lift and necklift. With facelift procedures, you can turn back the clock by 10 to 20 years with less than a week of downtime.

DISCOVER THE JW DIFFERENCE

Plastic surgery on the face requires years of surgical experience and judgement honed most appropriately through a plastic surgery training program. We created our “Dare to Compare” Scorecard to educate patients about surgeons' qualifications and to help our patients make an informed decision. Many doctors who are not plastic surgeons attempt to provide facelifts. Use the Dare to Compare to learn how to find a true plastic surgeon.

MINI FACELIFT vs. FACELIFT vs. NECKLIFT

Patients often ask what the difference is between a mini facelift and traditional facelift. A mini facelift is for someone with subtle aging concerns. These patients are often experiencing sagging skin on the lower part of their face.

A traditional facelift is for someone with more advanced signs of aging. Excess skin is removed, giving the patient a more youthful appearance. The incision is a bit larger for this procedure than the mini facelift and may include an incision under the chin to address vertical banding of the neck.

A necklift is often combined with a facelift. This cosmetic procedure improves signs of aging around the jawline and neck. Removing excess fat from the jawline can give you a more defined look.
