If my child has a cleft lip/cleft palate, when should I schedule the consulation?
We prefer the initial evaluation to happen within the first few days after birth. This is important because you should understand the plan in the upcoming year for treatment and we must ensure assessments about vital functions like the ability to feed are completed.
What is plagiocephaly?
Plagiocephaly means "deformed skull". Plagiocephaly can be caused by position or by fusion of a growth plate in a child's growing skull, called craniosynostosis. It is important to get an assessment to determine the cause plagiocephaly and to get an appropriate treatment plan.
What is the Craniofacial Team?
The Craniofacial Team is designed to provide comprehensive, coordinated care for a child born complex facial differences such cleft lip and palate deformities, craniosynostosis, hemifacial microsomia and other complex issues. Our craniofacial surgeons are part of the Craniofacial Center at UIC. We prefer to use a team approach to care and to centralize care within one Center. We find that this approach works best for our pediatic patients.
Where will my child have the procedure?
We operate at 10 hospitals and multiple surgical centers. The number of choices you may have in clinical settings for your child is unique to our group. The appropriate hosptial for your child will be discussed with your team at the time of your consultation with us. We wil be able to discuss your options as it relates to your insurance, our preference, and our preference based on your child's clinical needs.
Children with congenital or acquired problems require specialized attention and expertise. Pediatric plastic surgery focuses on correcting the function or form of congenital conditions (present at birth), acquired problems, and injuries.
Diagnosis and treatment for a wide variety of conditions for all children, from newborns to adolescents, in a supportive, family centered environment. Your child receives ongoing, coordinated care from our team of specialists who work together to make the best decisions and provide the best care for your child. You will be assigned a patient coordinator who will help you make appointments when other specialists are required, help you understand the process with insurance, and guide you through the treatment plan.
