There are a few ways to augment the cheeks. One way to augment cheeks is through facial fat injections. Here fat is removed from one area of the body and injected into the cheek area to add fullness. Facial fat injections are best for restoring volume to the cheek area that is lost due to aging.
The other approach is to use a cheek implant. A High Density Porous Polyethylene (Medpor) is used for an implant and it provides a very natural looking shape and feel. It sits onto of the existing cheek bone and adds the additional projection required to get a balanced face. Cheek implants augment existing bone structure.
Your surgeon will work with you to determine the best approach for your needs during your consultation. In general, cheek implants are used for patients who are younger (and do not have mid face volume loss due to age) or for those who have under developed cheekbones. Facial fat injections are most often used as an approach for patients who have lost facial volume due to the natural aging process.
Cheek fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane, can be used to augment the cheeks. However, these filers are only temporary and usually last only several months. If you like the results from the fillers you may want to consider having facial fat injections or cheek implants to achieve a permanent result.
