Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

before before

Step 1: Anesthesia

Your plastic surgeon, along with your anesthesiologist, will suggest the best choice for you in terms of either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.

Step 2: Incision

The surgery is performed using either an open or closed approach. During the open approach, the incision is made across the columella, the strip of skin that separates the two nostrils. A closed approach involves a hidden incision made inside the nose. Both approaches raise the soft tissue covering the nose, allowing access to reshape the bone and soft tissue structures of the nose.

Step 3: The Reshaping

The nose is reshaped either by adding cartilage or removing extra tissue or bone from the nose. The process involved in re-shaping your nose will be catered to your specific nose and will be discussed in your in-person consultation.

Step 4: Correcting the Deviated Septum (Septoplasty)

A septoplasty is often combined with a rhinoplasty. If the septum is deviated, the corrective measures are taken place to straighten it. The projections inside the nasal structure are reduced in order to improve breathing.

Step 5: The Incision is Closed

When the desired shape is achieved, the soft tissue and skin covering the nose are redraped and the incision is closed. More incisions may be made in addition in the natural crease of the nostrils in order to modify their size (if appropriate).

Step 6- The Results

Within a week of the surgery, results should be evident. For the first week after surgery, internal tubes or splints may be used support the nasal structure in order to help the nose heal. The initial swelling should settle within the first few weeks, but it takes up to a year to see the full effects of rhinoplasty surgery, as the nose is made up of delicate tissue that takes a while to fully settle into place.

A good candidate for a "nose job" is a person who is seeking to change the appearance of their nose. Correction of any breathing issues can be achieved at the same time. Being in generally good health and having reasonable expectations is important for any cosmetic surgery procedure.

Rhinoplasty surgery takes 1.5 hours to 2 hours. Septoplasty surgery takes 1 hour to 1.5 hours.

Patients should plan to spend a half day at the surgical center due to the time it takes for check-in and recovery. We tell patients and their companions to bring a book, an i-Pad, or anything to keep them occupied during this time.

In order to help the new nasal structure heal during the initial recovery phase, a splint or packaging may be placed inside your nose. Bandages will be placed on the outside to help support and protect the new structure. Within the first week post-surgery, it is common to see some bruising around your eyes and nose. This will resolve. After the surgery you will be given specific instructions on how to care post-surgery.

Rhinoplasty is often done in conjunction with septoplasty to correct breathing problems. Additionally, chin surgery to further assist in facial harmony is often performed at the same time as a rhinoplasty to further enhance an patient's side profile.

Other than not correcting the shape, size, and appearance of the nose, there are not many permanent alternatives to nose surgery. Some temporary alternatives to surgery include highlighting and contouring with makeup and using filler to decrease the appearance of humps in very limited cases.

JW Plastic Surgery offers patients 10 hospitals and 5 surgical centers to select from when booking their surgery. In some cases, your personal health history will mean that we will recommend a specific health setting that will best meet your needs.

Most cosmetic patients in the Midwest decide to have surgery at JW Operatory, our practice's Joint Commission-accredited facility on the North Shore, due to price and availability.

Patients in Florida most often select our hospital facility in the Lower Keys for pricing and availability reasons.

In general, heath care insurance does not cover rhinoplasty surgery but is does often cover septoplasty surgery. A rhinoplasty is for beauty and a septoplasty is for breathing. Insurance excludes cosmetic "beauty" focused surgeries.

RHINOPLASTY (NOSE SURGERY)

Nose reshaping can help restore facial harmony by creating a more balanced, attractive profile. Because the nose is on the center of the face, a disproportionate or unattractive nose is more noticeable than other features and can impact of self esteem.

The goals of a rhinoplasty are often to straighten, narrow, and refine the shape of the nose. Rhinoplasty is often done in conjunction with septoplasty. A septoplasty is done to correct breathing and is covered by insurance unlike rhinoplasty.

Every face demands a nose that fits other features. Our approach to rhinoplasty is a custom approach that fits your face.

Discover the JW Difference

JW Plastic Surgery offers our rhinoplasty patients free software simulations. There is nothing more helpful for communication and encouragement than seeing the potential change in your nose. Our practice uses Canfield, the premier company in surgical simulation, to provide simulation to facial plastic surgery patients. This version of simulation is not just some fancy photoshop, but a true medical simulation software.

Once you have selected the practice for your procedure, you are welcome to schedule a special simulation appointment. Software simulation is a way in which the patient/doctor communication can be enhanced through the use of visual communication. It helps stimulate discussion on reasonable expectation and physical limitations.

Rhinoplasty vs Septoplasty

Patients often ask if nose surgery is ever covered by insurance. The answer is that it depends on the reason and type of nose surgery required.

Rhinoplasty surgery is focused on improving the outward appearance of the nose and is solely a cosmetic surgical procedure. Septoplasty surgery is focused on correcting airway-related nasal issues and is many times a procedure that can be covered by health insurance.

Frequently, rhinoplasty and septoplasty procedures are combined into one surgery so that both goals - one cosmetic and the other medical - can be achieved in one surgery.
