Liposuction

Liposuction can address those trouble bumps and bulges that will not respond to diet and exercise. Liposuction and body contouring techniques can offer you a way to finally achieve the body you desire.

What can liposuction treat?

Liposuction can address such issues as:

  • Fat deposits thighs, abdomen, buttocks, flanks, hips, upper arms, and chin that are unresponsive to overall weight loss
  • Dissatisfaction or self-consciousness about specific problem areas

Is liposuction right for me?

Liposuction is a highly individualized procedure and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else's desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. Liposuction may be a good option for you if:

  • You are at or near your ideal weight and have specific problem areas
  • You have good skin elasticity and muscle tone
  • You have a positive outlook and realistic expectations
  • You are physically healthy
  • You are not smoking

What happens during liposuction?
  • Step 1 - Anesthesia

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, and your anesthesiologist, will recommend the best choice for you.

  • Step 2 - Incisions, Flooding, and Removal of Localized Fat

Several small incisions are made and a wand like instrument (cannula) is inserted into the area being treated. At this point, anesthetic is injected into the area. The fat then removed and your body contoured to the desired shape. We prefer to use an open-drainage approach where the incisions are not sutured closed thereby allowing for drainage and better healing.

  • Step 3 - See the Results

The results of liposuction are apparent a few weeks after the procedure once the initial post-operative swelling subsides. For the first few days after surgery, you will wear a compression garment.

What should I expect during the recovery period?

Liposuction requires less recovery time than many other cosmetic procedures. Less than a week after liposuction, most patients are able to move normally and even return to work. After a few weeks, most of our patients feel comfortable enough to remove their compression garment and begin their new lives with their more contoured, appealing figures.

You will be given specific instructions that may include: How to care for the surgical site, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health, and when to follow up with Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, your Chicago cosmetic surgeon.

What are the risks of liposuction?

All plastic surgery carries risks along with the many rewards as no surgery is risk free. Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, will explain the risks in your consultation so you can make an informed decision based on your unique situation.
